In this Wednesday’s edition (9) of the Medical Correspondent board, of Novo Dia, the neurosurgeon Fernando Gomes talked about the importance of sleep for calorie loss and weight loss.
According to a study carried out by the University of Chicago Medicine and the University of Wisconsin, in the United States, which gathered 80 overweight adults who slept less than 6:30 a night, their periods of greatest weight loss occurred precisely when they slept the most – showing an average decrease of 270 calories consumed.
In an interview with CNN, sports doctor Walid Nabil spoke about the phenomenon. “We were able to see not only from this, but from several studies, that sleep is directly related to reduced risk of obesity.”
“Repairing sleep can affect, yes, the control of obesity. It is during sleep that our circadian cycle, which is our biological clock, is regulated, and hormones related to hunger and satiety are regulated. Sleep, like diet, physical activity and stress management is of fundamental importance for a healthy life,” she concluded.
For Fernando Gomes, sleeping well is an “additional ingredient” in the battle to lose weight, combined with dietary reeducation and physical exercise. The neurosurgeon highlighted the way in which the study was carried out, in which patients slept eight hours a night for two weeks and, consequently, had a reduction of 270 to 500 calories daily.
“You can imagine that with two more hours in bed, you have less time to eat. But it’s not that simple. Many hormones are regulated when we are sleeping, including the body’s biochemical control,” she explained.
Gomes also highlighted other physical benefits of sleep, such as lowering blood pressure, regulating glucose levels and releasing different hormones. “With this, we have time for the organism’s own “cleaning” to take place, in addition to all the benefit from the mental health point of view”, he pointed out.
Despite being constantly related to the aesthetic issue, weight loss is important, mainly, for the health of the human body. In this way, a better night’s sleep acts as a complement to the already known items that help in the control of body mass.
“If in two weeks this here [a redução de calorias diárias] It was already quite detected, you can imagine the force of habit, applying it in three months”, said the doctor.
Also according to Gomes, to better understand the functioning of the body itself and the rhythm of caloric burning in each person, endocrinologists are the specialists indicated for the subject.
With examinations, disorders such as hypo or hyperthyroidism – which change weight loss or gain beyond their own will – can be identified in the patient and treatment can be started.
