Before the US sanctions against Huawei, the smartphones of the Chinese corporation were repeatedly characterized by reviewers and specialized publications as the best camera phones of their time. Since 2016, Huawei has been developing cameras for its devices together with Leica, so it has at least half of the credit. In May 2021, the German company, according to media reports, terminated this cooperation and started looking for a new partner. Xiaomi was among the candidates – it seems that this is what happened.
Polish insider Kacper Skrzypek found several references to Leica in the source code of the MIUI Gallery Editor application at once, as reported by the Android Authority. In the application, they are mentioned as filters for video blogs: “Monochrome” (monochrome), “Natural” (natural) and “Live” (vivid). In turn, Huawei smartphones could capture black and white images (using a separate monochrome camera or software processing), and also offered filters for the camera app, including Live.
