Lost in Transition: the bureaucratic part in the gender transition process

Here we are at fifth episode of the Lost in Transition column: in the last episode we dealt with the surgical part within the gender transition process, which is not mandatory but at the discretion of the person.

In this episode Francesco Cicconetti will face the more formal step of the transition path, linked to the change of identification documents, or the bureaucratic part. The legal process to follow is very complex and consists of numerous steps to be taken: from the search for a lawyer expert in gender transition cases to the sentence in court, which is mandatory to operate and change the official documents on which there is still the old personal name.

But let’s go step by step: first of all, when should you contact a lawyer? What documents will the court request?
