Three men were arrested for carrying out the so-called love scam, or Tinder scam, which led to the charred death of a businessman in the Brasilândia neighborhood, north of São Paulo.
According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the businessman was lured to a meeting by a fake profile of a person identified as Jonnas, 35, in September 2023.
Arriving at the agreed location, he was surprised by the criminals, forced to follow them inside his own car, and was hit by a gunshot. The man died while still inside the vehicle.
The victim’s body and the car were found charred in a wooded area.
According to the complaint, the scammers created fake profiles on the dating app, arranged meetings and stole victims’ belongings.
Vinicius Souza Rodrigues, Leandro Matos Dias and Paulo Felipe Alves da Silva, who were arrested, are charged with criminal association and robbery with murder. One of them received a sentence of 32 years and the other two received 31 years – totaling 94 years.
The court ordered the three men to pay compensation of R$114,000 for material damages and another R$250,000 for moral damages to the victim’s family.
