Low adherence to the flu vaccine worries in the face of high cases, says researcher

InfoGripe coordinator and researcher Marcelo Gomes warned of the rise in flu cases in April.

A CNN Radio he stated that Influenza A and B viruses already lead to hospitalizations and that, although the numbers are not alarming, “they are on the rise in several states.”

“The low adherence to the flu vaccine causes concern because it avoids the serious condition of the disease”, he pointed out.

According to the Ministry of Health, only 25% of the target public has been vaccinated against the flu since the beginning of the campaign in April.

According to Marcelo Gomes, several factors explain this downward trend.

“One of them is communication, with campaigns so that the population not only knows that it is happening, but also that they understand why it is important.”

Another aspect, according to the researcher, is “the increased feeling that the flu is a bigger problem, and it is not, every year we have a significant number of hospitalizations and deaths.”

In the specialist’s assessment, an important issue to be taken into account is the opening hours of the health posts.

“Usually they work during business hours, since the population is working, so you have to think about that.”

Marcelo Gomes also reinforced that the greatest risk of developing serious cases of the flu is for the extremes of the age groups, that is, small children and the elderly.
