The Ultimate Fighting Championship participant became the first female UFC fighter, as well as the first Latin American athlete to be paid in cryptocurrency.
Brazilian Luana Pinheiro has announced that she has partnered with Bitwage to earn her salary in bitcoin (BTC).
Pinheiro told reporters that she continues to receive fiat payments from her sponsors, but plans to immediately convert them to BTC through the Bitwage service. Pinheiro joins boyfriend Matheus Nicolau, also a UFC fighter, who made a similar choice in March of this year.
When asked by journalists about the timeliness of this decision, against the background of the developing crisis in the cryptocurrency industry, Pineiro replied:
“I don’t think that I will have a problem with the fall or rise in the price of Bitcoin. If it were not so volatile, it would not grow. Consider that it takes the average person 10-15 years to earn a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu. Don’t forget that I’m from Brazil, so I know a thing or two about inflation and its consequences,” Pinheiro said.
It is worth recalling that American National Football League star Odell Beckham, who announced in 2021 that he would receive 100% of his annual salary in cryptocurrency, lost almost 61% of his income on foreign exchange and taxes on salaries paid in BTC.
