Luca Guadagnino at the Red Sea International Film Festival 2022: «The gift of recognizing talent»

For Luca Guadagnino a film is not born when it is shot, but in the editing room where it is assembled. “That’s where the film comes to life,” explains the director, guest of a special meeting during the second edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. His passion for cinema dates back to his childhood, so much so that there are three films that he considers precious for his education: Lawrence of Arabia, Psycho And Apocalypse Now, all seen in the company of his father. «What happens on the screen is something magical, it’s as if you were sucked into the montage yourself becoming part of the story you’re watching», underlines Luca Guadagnino once again, describing the experience of the theater as a real and own.

«I love what happens inside each of us as the images scroll on the screen. You fall in love with colors, with music, with power, with everything». But when did Luca Guadagnino decide he wanted to tell a story? «It is a mission that I gave myself when I was a teenager. When I was 16, when I was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I answered the director. I’m from Leo, so it’s a bit imperative», says Guadagnino, explaining that every film he shoots is as if it were his first. “It’s a long learning process. Every time you pretend you know what to do but, in the end, you only find out by putting your hands on it». However, the main thing that Luca feels he has learned from cinema is something else: recognizing and appreciating the talent of the many artists with whom he has had the pleasure and honor of working. Starting with Tilda Swinton.

“I didn’t care that she was famous. I like working with all those who shine when they work, with all who are gifted. I met Tilda in April, Berlusconi had just been re-elected prime minister in Italy and I sensed that catastrophe was near. We introduced ourselves, we made an appointment the next day at the hotel and she, incredibly, introduced herself: from there we became friends». Together with her, the other talent “invented” by Luca Guadagnino is another: Timothée Chalamet, with whom the director recently shot the beautiful Bones and All. “I’m attracted to gifted people. Like Claudio Gioè, with whom I shot his first film, and Maria Valverde. I think I have the gift of recognizing talent, and that’s why I’m proud of all the people who have become what they have become, starting right from Chalamet, a very intelligent person». Luca Guadagnino has no doubts about him: he could, sooner or later, pass to the other side of the camera and become a director, because he would have all the credentials to do so. “When we were shooting Call me by your name, Timothée came to the editing every day: he was excited to see the film being born. I think he has the talent of a director, and maybe one day he will show it ».
