Luca Zingaretti: “Twenty years of Montalbano, and who would have expected it”

“This award is the seal of twenty years of work that began quietly and became something overwhelming: thank you”. With these words an excited Luca Zingaretti collects the Silver Ribbon – Great International Series for the twenty years of Commissioner Montalbano. A project of which the actor, parading on the blue carpet, remembers the first steps with sincere and boundless affection: «When we started twenty years ago we never expected all this. The courage was of Carlo Degli Esposti, at the time he was a small producer who had the idea of ​​entrusting me with a magnificent role, to which I am deeply attached. Commissioner Montalbano was a unique human and professional experience, he really gave me so much as a man and as an actor ».

A pioneer of made in Italy television series, Montalbano punctually recorded audience records and the surprise episodes still continue to glue millions of spectators to the screen. “A result that surprises me every time and demonstrates this continuous, infinite love, which can only move me.” What moves you, above all? «The ability of the viewer to unite everyone in front of the television, even if it were the final of an important football match. It is exciting ». The success of the project was by no means taken for granted, especially abroad: “Over the years, Montalbano has become an almost identifying character for the Italians, but our satisfaction is that we have also managed to conquer foreign markets, which were completely unthinkable up to that time. and inaccessible for Italian products “.

His thank-you speech surprised those who foresaw a possible dedication to his wife Luisa Ranieri, with which a few days ago he walked the red carpet of the 78th Venice Film Festival. Zingaretti preferred to share the satisfaction of the award with his traveling companions: “I want to share this tape with the director Alberto Sironi, who is no longer there, the man who found a way to make them popular and so loved. from the audience of very special books. And I also want to share it with what I now consider my second family, that is the workers, colleagues Cesare Bocci, Peppino Mazzotta, Angelo Russo and all the actors who have passed on our sets who have contributed to making our series what it has become in all. the world”.

What is Montalbano’s legacy? «I think I have built up a special relationship with the public over time, they know that I only choose the projects I really believe in, in all respects. I think and I hope you will continue to follow me for other projects and characters ».
