The head of Lufthansa expects higher prices for airline tickets, due to the increase in fuel prices, while he estimates that the obligation to use a protective mask on airplanes will be abolished soon.
“We are seeing an increase in demand for bookings, but flights will become more expensive,” Lufthansa CEO Carsten Sports told Der Spiegel, noting that the company has already doubled prices this year, but that is not enough. “The cost of fuel, which increases with the price of oil, could only be partially offset by future transactions,” he said, adding that both airport charges, staff costs and ground services. According to analysts at Swiss bank UBS, the average Lufthansa ticket price in economy class in the second quarter of the year is 47% more expensive than in the same period last year.
Mr Sport, however, despite the price increases, does not expect a drop in ticket sales – on the contrary: “We are experiencing a boom in demand. “in the summer we expect an average of 90%,” he said. He even mentioned that for some itineraries, the reservations this year have already exceeded the corresponding ones of 2019. “After two years of pandemic, many are those who want to travel again, but also to take care of themselves. We see, for example, more and more “Individuals should buy tickets for the distinguished or first place. Correspondingly, the consumption of champagne inside the planes is also increasing”, he said characteristically. The German manager also expects that the obligation to use a mask on planes will soon be abolished. “Many countries are easing their requirements or abolishing them altogether – the same will happen in Germany,” he said, predicting that distance and mask regulations could be lifted as early as May.
In an interview with Der Spiegel magazine, Carsten Sport also said that Lufthansa intends to sell its entire fleet of 14 Airbus A380s, as this aircraft is considered very expensive compared to the latest models for long distances.
