Lufthansa, farewell to the greeting “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome on board”, farewell to the greeting that is not neutral

It is not the “welcome” that will go away. The welcome remains on board the aircraft Lufthansa and companies related to the German as reported by the picture. It is “Ladies and Gentlemen”, as they used to say in the old-fashioned variety, who leaves the company. It is not gender neutral and for this it would not be sufficiently inclusive. This obviously applies to the versions in all the languages used.

The goal is to send everyone a greeting, to make everyone feel welcome. At least that’s what the company says.

«For us it is important take everyone into consideration when greetingA spokesman explained. It is the path of politically correct that is being followed in many other fields. However, it is not easy to find an alternative.

It should be up to the cabin chief to say goodbye. They probably will generically with the simple “Good morning” or “Good evening”. It seems more risky, from the point of view of inclusiveness, to use the masculine plural to represent everyone, at least in Italian. Each language then has different hypotheses and difficulties.

As in Italy, in Germany the hypothesis of using is discussed the asterisk in order not to give an indication of gender in place of the letter or the ending that would give the indication of masculine and feminine. The other hypothesis made by several parties is the schwa, an inverted “e”, a symbol that exists in phonetics and has always been used to define the pronunciation of some vowels in different languages. The abolition of genders is not at stake, but the aim is to leave an open space for those who do not recognize themselves in the feminine or masculine.
