Luhansk begins to send wheat to Russia

Moscow, one of the two breakaway regions of eastern Ukraine backed by Moscow, announced today that it would soon begin shipping grain to Russia “liberated” by its forces.

Yuri Pronko, the “Minister of Agriculture” of the self-proclaimed “Luhansk People’s Republic”, said that so far they had been sending relatively small quantities of wheat by truck. “Tomorrow is a historic moment – the first wagons will go to Russia. Fifty wagons, more than 3,000 tonnes,” he was quoted as saying by Reuters, quoting Russia’s Tass.

Ukraine accuses Russia of stealing wheat from the occupied territories.

According to Tass, the silos in the “liberated part” of Luhansk contained about 300,000 tons of winter wheat and 200,000 tons of sunflower seeds left over from previous harvests. Pronko said that the silos were half full and in order to empty them so that the next harvest could be stored there, 120-130 grain wagons would have to be exported daily.
