Luigi Di Maio: Those who attack Draghi serve Putin’s propaganda

The Italian Foreign Minister, Luigi di Maio, sees a connection between the political crisis in Italy and Vladimir Putin, in his statements.

“The turmoil engulfing Mario Draghi’s government threatens to deny Ukraine vital military support in its fight against Russia,” Italy’s foreign minister warned, speaking in Politico and accused Draghi’s critics of “helping the work of Russian President Vladimir Putin” and appealed to political parties “to support the government in next week’s confidence vote”.

“The Russians are currently celebrating that they brought down another Western government,” the Italian foreign minister said, noting that he currently doubts Italy is in a position to send weapons to Ukraine.

“If the government falls, it could lead to paralysis, leaving the country without the power to continue arming Ukraine, help families with the cost of living crisis or sign new gas deals to build reserves, if for Russia to turn off the tap,” Di Maio noted.

A problem in energy contracts as well

“If the government dissolves on Wednesday, we will not have the power to sign new energy contracts and this is serious, because we are heading towards winter,” he pointed out.

As Politico points out, the 5-Star Movement, which was part of Prime Minister Draghi’s coalition, did not participate in the confidence vote on Thursday, leading Draghi to propose his resignation. Head of state Sergio Mattarella rejected the resignation and Draghi will return to parliament on Wednesday, possibly to hold a vote on his government or formally resign.

Draghi stood up to Putin

According to Di Maio, Draghi was one of the most aggressive Western leaders to stand up to Putin. With Italy a key member of the Western alliance opposing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Draghi was among the first to propose strong sanctions and freeze Russia’s foreign exchange reserves, as well as supporting Ukraine’s EU candidacy.

Politico points out that Di Maio once led the 5 Star Movement, but left the party a month ago over arms shipments to Ukraine. He also accused the party’s current leader and former prime minister Giuseppe Conte of aiding Putin in seeking to topple the government of one of the Kremlin’s staunchest opponents.

They attack Draghi and help Putin’s propaganda

“The incredible thing is that a former prime minister is attacking Draghi, helping Putin’s propaganda and autocracy in democracy,” Di Maio underlined, apparently referring to Giuseppe Conte.
