The poet Luiz Galvão, composer and founder of Novos Baianos, died this Saturday (22), aged 87. According to family information, Galvão was hospitalized at Incor (Instituto do Coração do Hospital das Clínicas), in São Paulo.
The death of Galvão, who founded Novos Baianos in 1969 alongside musicians Moraes Moreira, Baby do Brasil, Pepeu Gomes and Paulinho Boca de Cantor, was announced on social media by friends such as Caetano Veloso, Baby and the poet’s son, Lahirí. .
Galvão was one of the main composers and lyricists of Novos Baianos. Alongside mainly singer and guitarist Moraes Moreira, who died in April 2020, he wrote all of Novos Baianos’ original songs in “Acabou Chorare” (1972), which was named by Rolling Stone Brasil magazine, in 2007, as the greatest Brazilian record of all time.
Among the songs that Galvão wrote in the group are “Preta Pretinha”, “Tinindo Trocando”, “Swing de Campo Grande”, “Acabou Chorare”, “A Menina Dança”, “Sorrir e Cantar como Bahia”, “Besta É Tu ” and “Mystery of the Planet”, among others.
According to Galvão’s official profile on Instagram, he had health problems and was admitted to the Incor ICU in September.
