Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko and German Chancellor Angela Merkel had a telephone conversation, pro-Russian pro-government media reported, amid the immigration crisis on Poland’s border with the former Soviet state.
According to Pul Pervogo’s Telegram channel, which is close to the Belarusian president’s press service, Lukashenko and Merkel discussed prospects for resolving the crisis and providing humanitarian assistance to refugees trapped at the border.
No further details were given.
The talks are the first contact between the Belarusian president and a Western leader since Belarus’s presidential election in August 2020, in which Lukashenko declared victory despite allegations of fraud, sparking the largest anti-government protests in the country’s history.
