President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko has said that sanctions policy is aimed at eliminating Russia as a rival and leading to a world war.
According to the Russian news agency TASS: “In a situation like this we should be aware that there are such sanctions. Much is said about the banking sector. Natural gas, oil, SWIFT. It is worse than war. Russia is being pushed into a third world war. You have to be very cautious and avoid that. “Because nuclear war is the end of everything,” Lukashenko said.
He stressed that Belarus’s high-tech companies could help Russia acquire substitutes for Western and Asian microchips. “The United States is the only beneficiary of what is happening here. “In this way, Europe can show its position and eliminate competitors.”
“What is happening today urges us to work closely together. “For example, they have warned Russia that they will cut off supplies of high-tech equipment first and foremost, microchips and so on, which we manufacture in our industrial association Integral (Belarus manufacturer of microchips and LCD displays),” Lukashenko said. Belarus may be a little bigger, but by no means inferior in terms of quality and reliability.
Counterattacks will be painful for the West
The Belarusian president warned that Minsk and Moscow would impose very severe sanctions on the West.
“Our sanctions, which will be imposed by Russia and Belarus, will be massive. These mechanisms have already started to work. “If necessary, we will build these measures but not to our detriment,” he said.
“It’s a journalistic cliché: Iron curtain, Iron curtain. It started to fall a long time ago. There may be only a narrow gap left, letting some light pass. When the Iron Curtain did not benefit them, they criticized it. Now they lower it themselves. We do not need it. We will not make it fall. “We are very sensitive and careful,” Lukashenko said.
“Sanctions for Belarus too” is Europe’s answer
Hours later, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen responded to the EU by announcing new sanctions, including on Belarus.
“Or we will target the other attacker in this war, the Lukashenko regime, with a new package of sanctions, affecting their most important areas. All these measures come at the top of the strong package presented yesterday, and agreed upon by our international partners.
