Lula attends the wake of Pepe Mujica in Uruguay

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva attended the funeral of Pepe Mujica, former president of Uruguay, early in the afternoon of Thursday (15). The ceremony is held in the city of Montevideo.

The first lady Janja accompanies the Brazilian president. In addition to it, they are part of the entourage:

  • Humberto Costa – Senator
  • Jandira Feghali – Federal Deputy
  • Guilherme Boulos – Federal Deputy
  • Aloizio Mercadante – President of BNDES

The funeral open to the public began on Wednesday (14) at the Lost Steps Hall of the Legislative Palace, in the Uruguayan capital.

Lula landed around 1:30 pm at Carrasco International Airport, where he went to the ceremony.

The president should still attend the Mass held for the longtime friend, scheduled for 14h, at the venue.

Pepe Mujica died last Tuesday (13), at the age of 89. The information was confirmed by the current Uruguayan president, Yamandú Orsi.

The cause of death has not yet been released, but the former president was diagnosed with a tumor in the esophagus in 2024 and faced an autoimmune disease that affected his kidneys. During an interview, Mujica’s wife said her husband was in “palliative care.”

After the ceremony, following the desire for Mujica, he will be cremated and the ashes will return to the farm in which he lived in Rincón del Cerro, outside Montevideo, to be buried under the tree where his dog Manuela is also buried.
