President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) called for “absolute priority” in the repatriation of Brazilians who are in the region of conflict between Israel and Hamas, classified by the United States and the European Union as a terrorist group.
The determination was reinforced in a video conference meeting on Monday afternoon (9). Ministers José Múcio Monteiro (Defense), Paulo Pimenta (Communications) and Márcio Macêdo (General Secretariat of the Presidency) participated, as well as Celso Amorim, head of the international advisory department of the Presidency of the Republic.
Lula, who has been working from Palácio do Alvorada while recovering from hip surgery, also spoke by phone with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira. The chancellor is in Indonesia.
According to government members, the president reaffirmed his position of seeking a ceasefire solution. The country holds the temporary presidency of the Security Council of the United Nations (UN).
So far more than 2,377 people have asked to leave Israel; 26 in the Gaza Strip.
