President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) compared the attempted coup in Bolivia to the attack against the Three Powers of Brazil, on January 8, 2023, during a speech at the Mercosur Summit this Monday (8).
“The unanimous reaction to June 26 in Bolivia and January 8 in Brazil demonstrate that there are no shortcuts to democracy in our region. But we must remain vigilant,” Lula stressed.
The meeting of heads of state of the bloc takes place in Asunción, Paraguay.
During his speech, Lula also addressed the recent defeats of the far right and ultra-right in the parliamentary elections in the United Kingdom and France, where left-wing coalitions won voters’ preference last week.
“Both are fundamental to the defense of democracy and social justice against the threats of extremism,” said Lula.
