Lula defends a trip to Russia and says criticism is “political exploitation”

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) defended his visit to Russia and the meeting with the leader Vladimir Putin, stating that criticism against his presence in the military arrest that marked the 80th anniversary of Nazis defeat are “political exploitation.”

Lula’s trip to Moscow and the meeting with Putin received criticism from some sectors in Brazil and abroad, with representatives of the Ukrainian government stating, for example, that the Brazilian leader is no longer able to try to mediate a peace agreement between the two sides.

In addition, part of the opposition in Brazil criticized the fact that the President participated in the victory Day Parade alongside several dictators, such as Nicolás Maduro, from Venezuela, and Aleksandr Lukashenko, from Belarus.

“I do not see what criticism can be made to a country that lost 26 million young people (during World War II) make the celebration that was made,” he said.

Lula says criticism is the result of political exploitation and that it was important to have gone to Moscow. “If everything goes political exploitation, you can do nothing,” he said, ensuring that his presence in the celebrations does not disable it as a potential mediator of peace.

“Brazil’s position is very, very, very solid. That is, regardless of whether I came here, regardless of whether I go to China, regardless of whether I go to Argentina, regardless of whether I go to any country, our position remains the same with what we think about the Ukraine War: we want peace,” he said.

The statements were made at a news conference before his departure to China, the next stage of his travel schedule.

When asked about the impact of his visit to Russia in the midst of the conflict, Lula said he made “a question of coming here to say that Brazil is defending the strengthening of multilateralism.”

He also criticized the advancement of protectionism: “Wanting to return to the theory of protectionism is not interested in anyone but the one who proposed the idea.”

The president reported that he discussed directly with Vladimir Putin, in a bilateral meeting held on Thursday (9), Brazil’s desire for a peaceful resolution for the conflict.

He said he will continue to work and cheer for peace and the end of conflict in Europe, making himself available to help facilitate dialogue “as long as both sides want peace.”

Lula also pointed out that all of Europe should “be celebrating yesterday”, when asked about the celebrations of the 80 of the victory of World War II held in Russia.

In addition, it criticized the high investments of countries in weapons, reiterating that resources could be directed to other global priorities such as the fight against hunger.
