Lula defends integration of AL and partnership with China in summit in Beijing

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva defended integration between Latin American countries and a strong commercial and strategic partnership with China during his speech at the summit meeting between Celac (Latin American and Caribbean states) and the Chinese government.

According to Lula, the only way for Latin America to develop and progress is through integration between countries in the region.

“There is no way out to any country (Latin America) individually. We have 500 years of history that prove it. Either we joined, among us, and look for partners who want, with us, to build the shared world, or Latin America tends to remain a region that represents poverty in today’s world,” he said.

The Brazilian president also said that China was fundamental to the region’s economic growth, helping to reduce social inequalities at the beginning of this century through trade and investments.

According to him, the sector where this is most evident is infrastructure, where Chinese support was and remains fundamental.

Lula still defended, once again, multilateralism and free trade, stating that it must have balanced exchanges between countries.

In addition to the Brazilian leader, the left -wing presidents of Chile, Gabriel Boric, and Colombia, Gustavo Petro were at the meeting. Chinese President Xi Jinping, host of the meeting, also spoke

He said his government supports the Latin America and the Caribbean nations in expanding their influence on the multilateral scenario.

The defense of multilateralism has been a very close point between Brasilia and Beijing, especially after the imposition of unilateral tariffs by President Donald Trump of the United States, exports to virtually all countries.

Trade between China and Latin America exceeded $ 500 billion for the first time last year, according to XI.

The Asian giant is also the largest commercial partner in Brazil and most of the members of Celac.

Lula concluded his speech by saying that the future and ambitions of Latin American countries depend much more on their own leaders than on other countries, despite seeking alliances.

“The future of Latin America does not depend on President Xi Jinping, the US President, and neither depends on the European Union. It depends pure and simply that we want to be great or remain small,” said the Brazilian leader.
