Lula disembarks in RS with Lira and Pacheco to monitor storm damage

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) arrived in Rio Grande do Sul this Sunday morning (5) to visit cities hit by heavy rains last week and check out the state aid task force set up by the federal government.

A CNN found that Lula will fly over the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre. The exact route, however, depends on weather conditions. The president's expectation is to fly over Canoas, São Leopoldo, Eldorado do Sul and Porto Alegre, where he will land.

The presidential delegation includes the first lady, Janja Lula, and ministers Rui Costa (Civil House), José Mucio (Defense), Fernando Haddad (Finance), Renan Filho (Transport), Silvio Costa Filho (Ports and Airports), Camilo Santana (Education), Nísia Trindade (Health), Luiz Marinho (Work and Employment), Wellington Dias (Social Development and Fight Against Hunger), Marina Silva (Environment and Climate Change), Jader Filho (Cities), Márcio Macêdo ( General Secretariat) and Alexandre Padilha (Institutional Relations Secretariat).

In addition to government ministers, the presidents of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), and the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), also went to Rio Grande do Sul, as well as ministers Edson Fachin (STF) and Bruno Dantas (president of the Federal Audit Court). The commander of the Brazilian Army, General Tomás Paiva, is also in the delegation.

The group joins ministers Paulo Pimenta (Secretariat of Social Communication) and Waldez Góes (Regional Integration and Development), who arrived in the state on Saturday (4) morning and are closely following the relief and assistance actions.

According to Minister Paulo Pimenta, there are more than 30 aircraft and boats helping to help the population and more than 10 thousand rescues have already been carried out. Pimenta also said that the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, which is facing a historic flood on the Guaíba River, is one of the main points of attention.

“We are going to have a busy Sunday, especially in the cities around Porto Alegre, Canoas, Eldorado, Guaíba. We will work hard so that all lives can be saved and so that we can complete this first stage of work, and then think about reconstruction.”

According to the latest update from the state government, there are 332 municipalities affected and 707,190 people are already affected. The state has 80,573 homeless people and another 15,192 people in shelters. There are 66 confirmed deaths and another six under investigation, in addition to 155 injured and 101 missing.
