Lula: Election of Secretary-General Woman can rescue UN credibility

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on Wednesday (9) that the community of the Latin American and the Caribbean states (Celac) can help rescue the credibility of the United Nations if he elects the first woman as secretary general of the organization.

The statement was made in a speech by the bloc’s summit. “Celac can contribute to rescue the credibility of the UN by electing the first secretary general woman of the organization,” said the Brazilian president.

Lula added that it is time to face the debate about the consensus rule. “Even if we recognize its merit of forging convergences, it is undeniable that today it has generated more paralysis than unity, becoming a true right of veto,” he said.

In his speech, Lula stressed that the world “boasts the sad record” of the largest number of conflicts since World War II and that needs “peace, development and free trade.”

Lula also asked the countries not to omit themselves before the economic embargo to Cuba, the sanctions against Venezuela and the “social chaos” in Haiti.

He also insisted that countries in the region recover the tradition of diplomatic asylum. Last year, the Mexican Embassy in Quito was invaded by police to capture former president of the country, Jorge Glas, who was sailed at the scene.

The Argentine embassy in Caracas, protected by Brazil, is under constant harassment of Venezuelan agents, who often prevent access to water and food, and who according to Venezuelan opponents who have been in place for over a year have cut the energy of diplomatic thirst.
