The Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) government is working on measures to regulate the sports betting market, according to sources heard by the CNN . According to these government sources, the Ministry of Finance is still working on the text, which should be sent to the Ministry of Sports soon.
The government’s technical team is expected to finalize the draft of the text and forward it to the parliamentary advisory, which can make political adjustments to guarantee support for the measures in Congress.
A CNN found that the government package includes a provisional measure to regulate the operation of these betting sites.
These bets have been allowed since the end of 2018, when a law on the subject was enacted. Regulations for its operation, however, do not yet exist. This is one of the reasons why many betting companies are based abroad, usually in tax havens.
The Lula government’s decision comes amid investigations that Serie B players of the Brazilian Football Championship would have participated in a scheme to manipulate results and guarantee betting wins.
In the scheme investigated, which involves an athlete who played for Vila Nova (GO), manipulation took place from penalties committed by players (since bets have become increasingly detailed, involving statistics such as penalties, corners and fouls). .
A CNN contacted the ministries, but received no response so far.
