President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) spoke with Nicolás Maduro, president of Venezuela, this Wednesday (5).
He highlighted to the head of state the importance of the presence of international observers in the Venezuelan electoral process, scheduled for July, according to the Planalto Palace in a statement.
The Brazilian president also expressed support for the Barbados Agreement, signed in the context of a mediation process by several countries, including Brazil, to guarantee the holding of presidential elections in 2024 in Venezuela.
“Lula reiterated Brazilian support for the Barbados agreements and highlighted the importance of having a broad presence of international observers,” said Planalto.
“He also expressed the expectation that the sanctions in force against Venezuela could be lifted, in order to help the electoral process move forward in a climate of trust and understanding,” the statement added.
Lula also took the opportunity to discuss the beginning of negotiations to settle a cooperation agreement and facilitate investments and renegotiate bilateral debt.
