Lula is “very angry” and may intensify criticism of Israel, sources say

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) tends to further intensify the criticisms made since yesterday against Israel, according to assistants and people close to the PT member heard by the CNN .

According to interlocutors, Lula’s movement is planned. And it was just waiting for the repatriation of Brazilians who were in the Gaza Strip to be put into practice.

Since last Monday (13), Lula has changed his tone regarding the conflict, adopting a much more critical position towards the Israeli response to the Hamas attacks.

The president, said an ally, is “very angry” about some recent events. He cited as an example the rapprochement between Israel’s ambassador to Brazil, Daniel Zonshine, and former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

Last week, Zonshine met with former president Jair Bolsonaro in Congress. Both say the meeting was not planned. But the agenda contributed to Bolsonaro’s allies starting to politically capitalize on the departure of Brazilians from the Gaza Strip, crediting the liberation of the border to an alleged intermediation made by the former president.

Lula, say allies, had already expressed in private conversations his dissatisfaction with Israel’s reaction to the Hamas attacks. The president, according to interlocutors, had already harshly criticized in private conversations the intensity of the military response and the death of civilians.

Yesterday afternoon, Lula had already compared the Israeli reaction to the Hamas attacks. At night, the president reinforced his criticism. “If Hamas committed an act of terrorism and did what it did, the state of Israel is also committing multiple acts of terrorism by not taking into account that children, by not taking into account that women are not at war, by not take into account that they are not killing soldiers,” said Lula.

Historically, left-wing parties, including the PT, have been critical of Israel. Since the outbreak of the conflict, Lula had been called upon by the PT for a more incisive speech in defense of the Palestinians. The government’s guidance, however, was clear in maintaining a mild speech, to prioritize the release of Brazilians waiting to be repatriated.
