The president-elect, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), will meet this Tuesday afternoon (15) with the special envoy for the climate of the United States, John Kerry.
This will be one of Lula’s most important bilateral meetings at COP27, taking place in Sharm el-Sheik, Egypt.
The president-elect should reassure Kerry of his intention to radically change the Brazilian environmental agenda, paying special attention to the protection of the Amazon rainforest.
Reducing deforestation in the Amazon is one of the US government’s top environmental priorities.
The US president himself mentioned the Amazon in his speech at COP27 last Friday (11), when he called for an end to the deforestation of forests around the world.
Biden said preserving the environment is one of the most important ways to avoid climate change.
According to him, the indigenous peoples, who are “protectors of the forests” in various parts of the world, have already learned a long time ago that these biomes are worth much more standing than they are deforested. “It’s that simple,” he emphasized.
The following day, it was Kerry’s turn to defend, in conversation with the press, the end of deforestation in the forest.
It is expected that Lula will also meet with representatives of the governments of China, Germany and Norway.
The two European countries that finance the Amazon Fund, which was suspended during the government of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
However, the two governments have already stated that they will return to funding forest protection under the new Brazilian government.
