Lula meets with Olaf Scholz, Macron and the director of the IMF this Saturday (20)

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) holds a series of meetings with heads of state and international authorities this Saturday (20), at the G7 Summit.

The agenda takes place in Hiroshima, Japan, where he meets this morning and morning with Kristalina Georgieva, director general of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Emmanuel Macron, president of France, and Olaf Scholz, prime minister of Germany.

Lula has already met with the president of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, and with the Japanese prime minister, Fumio Kishida. Experts heard by CNN pointed out that the trip is a “window of opportunity” to attract investments to Brazil.

Among the topics to be addressed are the war in Ukraine, strengthening the engagement of the G7 with countries in the Southern Hemisphere, solutions for energy, food security, climate change, health and development.

In addition, plans to strengthen the global health architecture with a focus on prevention, preparation and responses to future health crises — a topic that became evident after the Covid-19 pandemic — should also be discussed.

And, in order to achieve all targets of the UN 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, the summit will continue to promote initiatives in the areas of gender, human rights, digital technology and science and technology.

At the end, two documents must be issued: one by the G7 member countries and another by the invited members.

The G7 is made up of the seven most industrialized nations in the world: Germany, Canada, the United States, France, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom.

For this weekend’s Summit, Brazil, Australia, Comoros, Cook Islands, India, Indonesia, South Korea and Vietnam were invited.

President Lula landed in Japan on Thursday (18), accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira. This is the Brazilian’s seventh participation in G7 meetings as a guest. This year, he was called by the Japanese Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida.

Meeting with UN secretary and possible meeting with Zelensky

On Sunday (21), he will meet with António Guterres, secretary general of the United Nations (UN). There is also an expectation that he will personally meet with Volodymyr Zelensky, president of Ukraine, according to Américo Martins, correspondent for the CNN In London.

Ukrainian diplomacy contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil to request a bilateral meeting with Lula. Itamaraty replied that it is “doors open” for the request.

The Brazilian government is trying to establish a position by seeking dialogue and peace to resolve the conflict. However, Lula’s speeches generated some noise in the relationship with the United States and with Ukraine itself.

There is even fear on the part of Brazil that the texts of the official declaration of the G7 countries use a harsh tone about Russia, as reported by Priscila Yazbek, correspondent for the CNN .
