President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) has a meeting scheduled with the president of Egypt, Abdul Fatah Khalil El-Sisi, this Thursday (15). The meeting takes place on the second day of the Brazilian head of state's trip to the African country.
Lula arrived in Cairo, capital of Egypt, on Wednesday (14), taking the opportunity to visit the Giza pyramids with First Lady Janja.
According to Itamaraty, problems related to the conflict between Israel and Hamas should be addressed in the meeting between the two leaders.
Bilateral agreements must also be signed in the areas of bioenergy and science, technology and innovation. Climate change and reform of international organizations are other likely topics of discussion.
Later, Lula is expected to speak to the press, before participating in a lunch hosted by El-Sisi.
Afterwards, the PT member will go to a meeting with the secretary-general of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, and will also attend an extraordinary session of the group's council of representatives.
Finally, Lula will take a flight from Cairo international airport to Addis Adeba, Ethiopia, where he will have bilateral meetings and participate as a guest at the 37th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, an entity that brings together the 55 nations of Africa. .
Diplomatic agenda
In 2024, diplomatic relations between Brazil and Egypt turn 100 years old.
According to Itamaraty, ties have been strengthened in recent months with negotiations for the departure, through Egypt, of Brazilians who were in the Gaza Strip amid the war between Israel and Hamas.
The intention of the visit and meeting is also to strengthen trade relations, especially regarding agricultural products. Egypt is one of Brazil's main trading partners in Africa.
The Brazilian government hopes that the Egyptian government will soon approve new slaughterhouses and slaughterhouses in Brazil for the export of beef.
