Lula plans to dismember the Ministry of Economy

Former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) has proposed restoring the division between Finance and Planning if he is elected to command the Planalto Palace.

According to PT allies, the presidential candidate’s assessment is that the merger of the two portfolios in the Ministry of Economy harmed the debate on the elaboration of public policies.

The division of the two structures is also defended by parties of the allied base of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), for whom a single portfolio made the debate on public policies difficult in the current president’s first term.

The assessment made by government parliamentarians is that the size of the superfolder affected the progress of structuring projects and the performance of Minister Paulo Guedes.

For Planning, the main candidate in a possible PT administration is the former Minister of Finance Nelson Barbosa.

As for the Treasury, allies of the presidential candidate believe that a moderate and political name, with openness to the financial market, could contribute to reducing resistance to a PT government.

The merger of Finance and Planning was carried out by the current management with the objective of wiping down the Esplanada dos Ministérios, which at one time had 39 folders. Today, there are 23 ministries.
