President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) wants to organize a summit with the presence of all South American presidents, in Brasília, still in the first half of this year.
The intention of the president and Itamaraty is to increase integration between countries in the region and discuss matters of interest to all, such as trade, food security and the reduction of inequalities.
In addition, Lula wants to reactivate the Union of South American Nations (Unasur).
The entity was emptied in recent years, and Brazil abandoned it early in the term of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
After visiting Brazil’s main trading partners –Argentina, the United States, China and Europe–, Lula is now turning his attention to Latin America and, in particular, South America.
This is the most important region for our diplomacy, and from where Brazil can actually project its leadership to try to consolidate itself as a global player in geopolitical matters.
The dates for the summit have not yet been set, as they depend on the agendas of all leaders in the area. But Itamaraty hopes to announce the event soon.
Right after the South American meeting, Brazil also wants to hold the first summit of the Amazon countries, in Belém, Pará.
This meeting will be very important for the governments of the nine countries that share the forest to define joint policies to defend the environment and the forest and combat climate change.
It is possible that even the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, will attend the event, as French Guiana is a territory controlled by Paris.
According to CNN found out from sources in the government, Lula intends to take the concerns of both groups of countries to the UN General Assembly, in September.
This is going to be another way for the country to show the world its leadership in the region.
This Thursday (27), President Lula also spoke via videoconference with the President of Argentina, Alberto Fernandez.
The two precisely discussed the integration of the continent, the possibilities of increasing bilateral trade and the negotiations of the free trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union.
