Lula praises the decision of European countries to recognize the State of Palestine

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) praised this Thursday (23), the decision of Spain, Norway and Ireland to recognize the State of Palestine.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Lula said that the decision “does justice in relation to the claim of a whole people, recognized by more than 140 countries, for their right to self-determination”

The president also stated that the recognition of the Palestinian state is historic and “will have a positive effect in supporting efforts for peace and stability in the region.” Lula also reinforced that peace will only be possible when the existence of the State of Palestine is guaranteed.

“Brazil was one of the first countries in Latin America to take this position, when in 2010 it recognized the State of Palestine on the 1967 borders, which includes the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, with East Jerusalem as its capital,” said the president.

The Israeli government withdrew its ambassadors to Spain, Norway and Ireland and condemned the decision. On Thursday, Israel reprimanded the ambassadors of European countries over their governments' plan to recognize a Palestinian state, Israeli officials said, dismissing the initiative as an attempt to “resurrect… old and failed policies.”
