Former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said this Wednesday (15) that Brazil cannot pass on the image to foreign countries that it “kills those who defend the Amazon” and has promised to end “mining” in indigenous lands. and demarcate them if elected in October.
He spoke on the subject during an act in Uberlândia (MG), when commenting on the news that the Federal Police had possibly found the bodies of indigenist Bruno Araújo Pereira and English journalist Dom Phillips, who had disappeared in the Amazon. Lula spoke alongside the pre-candidate for the government of Minas Gerais Alexandre Kalil (PSD).
According to the former president, the demarcations are “a moral commitment, an ethical commitment of those who are humanists, of those who defend native peoples”.
“This country is very big, it is very civilized, it cannot pass the image abroad that we are uncivilized, that we kill those who defend the Amazon, those who defend the indigenous people. They kill because people defend the fight against mining on indigenous land,” he said.
Lula said that, in addition to the demarcations, he will create “conditions” for indigenous peoples to have “access to the things they need to survive”.
