Lula says Brazilian hostage to Hamas could be released in the next few days

The Brazilian who is held hostage by Hamas could be released in the coming days, said President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) this Thursday (30).

Lula thanked Qatar for the role played in the negotiations to allow the repatriation of Brazilians in the Gaza Strip, but highlighted that they are still working on the release of the man detained by the radical Islamic group.

“[O Catar terá um papel importante] in the release of a hostage, who can still be released in these days”, he stated.

The Brazilian embassy in Israel confirmed to CNN this Thursday that the Brazilian Michel Nisenbaum, missing since the beginning of the war, is considered a hostage of Hamas, as reported by Basília Rodrigues, political analyst at CNN, and Michel Gawendo, correspondent for CNN.

The information was confirmed to Brazilian diplomacy by Israeli authorities.

This morning, Ambassador Frederico Meyer received the Brazilian’s sister at the embassy in Tel Aviv and confirmed his hostage status.

Kidnapping of Michel Nisenbaum

Michel Nisenbaum, 59, who is also an Israeli citizen, was kidnapped on the morning of October 7, when the Hamas attack took place.

He was on the way to take his granddaughter, who would sleep that night with her father, but contact with the family was lost at 7am.

When his daughter tried to contact Nisenbaum at 7:20 am, the call was answered in Arabic and shouts of “Hamas” were heard, according to the Brazilian representation.

The Brazilian-Israeli family is being monitored and updated by representatives of the Israeli government.

“We have official support. Two people are in charge of our family and help us with everything we need”, said Mary Shohat, sister of the missing man.

In an exclusive interview with CNN This Thursday (30), Mary Shohat, sister of Michel Nisenbaum, the Brazilian kidnapped by Hamas, reported how the family has been facing the last few weeks.

“[Têm sido] very ugly days. We feel like our chest is about to explode. Our hearts are bleeding.”
