Lula says he wants “understanding” between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on Wednesday (9) not wanting a “war” between China and the United States and wanting “understanding” between presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping.

“The United States, instead of wanting to fight, could sit around a goal and make a negotiation. That’s it. No need to have war,” said the Brazilian president. “I want peace. I want understanding between Xi Jinping and Trump, because the world will only have won for it,” he said.

The statement was given to Brazilian journalists in Honduras, after the presidential summit of the community of Latin American and Caribbean states (Celac).

Lula remembered the two world wars and said that “it can happen in a third madness.” Because today it is not cannon, today is not rifle, today is atomic bomb, ”he said.

The Brazilian president said he was “concerned about the unilateral decisions of the president of the United States.” “Each day he announces a measure, each day he says one thing. That is, we do not know what will be the devastating effect on the economy,” he said.

Lula said it is not yet possible to determine the impact of Trump’s tariffs or on the American economy itself. “No one can say that it will be good or that it will be bad, because you need to know how much it will cost from the price point of view, from the point of view of the multilateral relationship.”

Lula said it was “increasingly visible that it is a personal fight [de Trump] with China. ”He referred to Trump’s recent measure to raise tariffs against the Asian country to 125%, while reducing those imposed on other nations to 10% for at least 90 days.

Lula defended multilateralism and criticized attempts at military, cultural or economic hegemony. “The best way for you to make a good deal is to sit at a negotiating table, without hegemonism. No arrogance, without arrogance,” he concluded.
