President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) stated, during his weekly live “Conversation with the President” this Tuesday (24), that the UN does not act to prevent Israeli settlers from invading Palestinian territories because it is weakened.
“Every day we see that Israeli colonies invade Palestinian land and the UN does nothing, because the UN is weakened,” said Lula.
The head of the Executive asked that Israel and Palestine keep the territories demarcated for them at the UN and demanded more interference from the organization in resolving the conflict between Israel and the radical Islamic group Hamas.
“We need to ensure that there, in the Middle East, Israel keeps the territory that is its own and is demarcated by the UN and the Palestinians have the right to have their land, it’s as simple as that and there is no need for anyone to invade the no man’s land”, he defended.
Tensions in the West Bank
In his speech, Lula made reference to the West Bank, a Palestinian territory west of the Jordan River, adjacent to Israel and Jordan.
Since Israel took control and occupied the West Bank in 1967 following the Six-Day War, it has been settled by Israeli civilians, often under military protection.
Most of the world considers these settlements illegal under international law. But despite this, successive Israeli governments have promised to support them.
Israel views the West Bank as “disputed territory” and claims its settlement policy is legal. This year, following the election of the most right-wing and extremist government in Israel’s history, under the leadership of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, violence between settlers and Palestinians in the West Bank has increased.
Settlers have long been accused of carrying out acts of violence against Palestinians. In addition to murders, these attacks included incidents of physical assault, property damage, and harassment.
Brazil on the UN Security Council
Brazil, which presides over the UN Security Council, has positioned itself internationally and leads debates in favor of opening humanitarian corridors and a ceasefire in the war.
In the live broadcast, the president directly charged the United States. According to Lula, the Americans and the UN could intervene more to resolve the conflict.
“If the UN had strength, the UN could have greater interference. The United States could have greater interference, but people don’t want it. People want war, they want to encourage hatred, they want to encourage hatred and I don’t see it that way. You can criticize me all you want. Lula will continue talking about peace”, stated Lula.
