President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) warned this Monday (23) about the non-compliance with decisions of the United Nations (UN) and criticized the lack of global governance at an event of the Goalkeepers initiative, a foundation of billionaire Bill Gates.
The president also stated that the UN, which led the creation of the State of Israel in 1948, “does not have the courage to create the Palestinian State.”
During the conversation, Lula said that the war between Russia and Ukraine and the conflict between Israel and Hamas could have been avoided if the UN decisions were followed by the countries.
The Brazilian leader also defended the need for reform of the UN Security Council and greater participation of countries from the Global South in the organization. Lula also criticized the veto power granted to the countries that make up the Council: the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China and Russia.
“No one respects a UN decision anymore, so the poor no longer have representation. And the UN could be that reference, it could gain that credibility,” declared the president.
Lula was awarded by Goalkeepers and participated in a talk show alongside Bill Gates, one day before speaking at the UN General Assembly.
