President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) once again asked for a reform in the UN Security Council and criticized the current member countries.
During a speech alongside the president of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, this Saturday morning (22nd), in Lisbon, Lula asked for a “revision” of the United Nations body.
“We need to create a new world governance. That is why Brazil has been fighting a lot for us to review the UN Security Council and its permanent members. It is necessary to enter more countries, more continents and establish a new geography”, declared the PT.
“The geography of 1945 is not the same. We cannot continue with council members waging war. They are council members, they decide the war without even consulting the council. It was like this in the United States against Iraq, Russia against Ukraine, France and England against Libya. That is, they themselves disrespect the decisions of the Security Council and that is why we need to try to change, ”he added.
Reforming the Council is an old demand in the country – defended, for example, by both Lula and former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
Lula’s speech about Brazil’s “fight” to “have a more representative UN” was made while the Brazilian was also debating countries’ non-compliance with climate agreements.
“It’s no use making decisions at dozens of COPs. If you don’t have strong governance to demand compliance with decisions, they will never come into force”, said the president, this Saturday, citing, for example, the Paris Agreement and the Kyoto Protocol.

Lula added that that is why Brazil supports “ending the right of veto so that the UN can enforce the decisions we take on the environmental issue.”
The petista still demanded another attitude on the part of the United Nations: the recognition of the Portuguese language as an official language.
“When we go there to speak, material in Portuguese is not distributed to anyone. We always have to translate into another language and I think it’s a lack of respect – from others towards us, and from ourselves towards us”, said Lula.
Lula denies having equalized responsibilities, but says that neither Russia nor Ukraine want to stop the war
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said, this Saturday morning (22), that he had “never” equalized the responsibilities of Russia and Ukraine in relation to the war, but also stated: “Russia does not want to stop, Ukraine does not wants to stop.”
The statements were given during a press conference that the PT member granted alongside Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, with whom he met in Lisbon this morning.
Lula was questioned by reporters about his recent positions expressed on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, such as pointing out that the US and the EU had prolonged the conflict and that the battle decision had been taken “by two countries”.
