President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) stated, this Saturday (17), that the definitive solution to the war in the Gaza Strip will depend on the creation of a Palestinian state recognized by the UN.
Speaking in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa, at the opening of the 37th Summit of the African Union, Lula said that “the moment is propitious to rescue the best humanist traditions of the great leaders of African decolonization”.
“Being a humanist today means condemning the attacks perpetrated by Hamas against Israeli civilians, and demanding the immediate release of all hostages,” declared the president.
“Being a humanist also requires rejecting Israel’s disproportionate response, which killed almost 30,000 Palestinians in Gaza – the vast majority of them women and children – and caused the forced displacement of more than 80% of the population,” he added.
Lula said that the solution to the conflict will only be lasting “if we move quickly towards the creation of a Palestinian State”, which is recognized as a full member of the United Nations (UN).
Lula asks for Security Council without veto power
During the speech, Lula took the opportunity to once again call for reform in the UN and its Security Council.
The president called for a “strengthened UN with a more representative Security Council, without countries with veto power, and with permanent members from Africa and Latin America”.
Currently, only the United States, China, Russia, France and the United Kingdom have veto power and permanent presence on the Council.
“For two years now, the war in Ukraine has exposed the Council’s paralysis. In addition to the tragic loss of life, its consequences are felt throughout the world, in the price of food and fertilizers”, he continued.
“There will be no military solution to this conflict. The time has come for politics and diplomacy”, concluded Lula.
