Lula should be one of the highlights in the second week of COP27

President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s trip to Sharm el-Sheik, Egypt, is causing great expectations among COP27 participants.

Lula should arrive in Egypt on Tuesday (15) evening to effectively participate in the discussions at the UN Climate Summit on November 16 and 17.

The president-elect already has confirmed meetings with the UN secretary general, António Guterres; with the host country’s president, General Abdel Fattah El-Sisi; and with representatives from countries interested in working together with Brazil to preserve the environment and create an effective carbon market.

Lula will be received by several allies who are already in Egypt, such as the former ministers of the Environment Izabella Teixeira and Marina Silva, as well as representatives of NGOs and other civil society organizations.

There was the possibility for the president-elect to announce at COP27 the name of his minister (or minister) of the Environment or even the holder of the future Ministry of Native Peoples. However, people close to PT, heard by CNN Brasil in Egypt, said they did not believe in this possibility.

Allies have said that Lula will carry the symbolism of his presence at the Climate Summit to try to show the world that “Brazil is back” in climate negotiations. the Brazilian environmental agenda, giving special importance to the preservation of the Amazon.

Lula is also going to meet with governors of the States of the Legal Amazon, who must deliver him a letter with demands from the region.

Among these leaders are the governors of Pará, Helder Barbalho; from Mato Grosso, Mauro Mendes; and from Acre, Gladson Cameli.

The president-elect should also participate in a debate session with the governors at the stand that the Consortium of States of the Legal Amazon set up at COP27.

The Amazon, by the way, will certainly be the most important topic of PT’s discussions with world leaders here in Sharm el-Sheik. .

On Friday (11), US President Joe Biden himself mentioned the Amazon in his speech at COP27, in which he called for an end to deforestation around the world.

The following day, Saturday (12), it was the turn of the US special envoy for the climate, John Kerry, to affirm once again that the Amazon needs to be preserved. of the biome in Brazil.
