Lula should raise his tone even further against Israel, sources say

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) decided to take a new stance after managing to rescue Brazilians in the Gaza Strip. This Monday (13), the PT member already set the tone that will be adopted from now on.

Since last week – after the meeting of the Israeli ambassador in Brazil, Daniel Zonshine with former president Bolsonaro – there was an expectation that the government would change its stance when it managed to guarantee the repatriation of the group that was in the Gaza Strip.

The subject was the subject of Lula’s meetings with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira. The president would have been advised to wait a little longer. Public statements, however, show that the PT member did not listen to the advice.

In the morning, during an event in Planalto, Lula compared Israel’s actions with those of Hamas.

“In this war, after the provoked act, and I say act of terrorism by Hamas, the consequences, Israel’s solutions, are as serious as Hamas’s, because they are killing innocent people without any criteria. [Israel] Throw bombs where there are children, where there are hospitals, under the pretext that a terrorist is there. There is no explanation,” he said.

At night, when welcoming Brazilians rescued from Gaza, the president repeated his speech.

“Hamas committed a terrorist act and did what it did. Israel is also committing several acts of terrorism by not taking into account that children are not at war, that women are not at war. They are not killing soldiers, they are killing children,” said the president.

Diplomacy’s concern is with the situation of Brazilians and their relatives who are still in the most critical region of the conflict. In addition to this first group that has already arrived in Brazil, there is another, made up of around 50 people who have shown interest in returning.

Other side

The president of the Israeli Confederation of Brazil (Conib), Claudio Lottenberg released a note in which he said he considered President Lula’s speech “wrong and dangerous”.

“Today’s speech by President Lula equating Israel’s actions with the terrorist group Hamas are mistaken and dangerous. Since the beginning of this tragic war, provoked by the most terrible massacre against Jews since the Holocaust, Israel has been making visible and proven efforts to spare Palestinian civilians, asking them to move to safer areas, creating humanitarian corridors, warning the population of the imminent attacks,” he said.

Lottenberg further stated that “Hamas, on the other hand, cynically and cowardly hides behind the women and children of Gaza” and that “the death of these Palestinian civilians is an important weapon of Hamas’ strategy, a strategy that the terrorist group itself recognizes that he practices.”

The president of the Israeli Confederation also declared that the statements encourage a distorted view of the conflict.

“In addition to being mistaken and unfair, statements like this from the President of the Republic are also dangerous. They encourage among their many followers a distorted and radicalized view of the conflict, at a time when the Brazilian government’s own security bodies are acting competently to arrest the terrorist network that was planning attacks against Jews in Brazil.

The Brazilian Jewish community expects balance from our authorities and a calm action that does not involve Brazil in the terrible conflict in the Middle East.”
