Lula should take advantage of the G-7 summit to wave to the US and Europe

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) should accept the invitation of the Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida, to participate in the G-7 summit, a group that brings together the most industrialized countries in the world.

Government sources tell the CNN that, after the negative repercussions of Lula’s speeches on the war in Ukraine between the European Union and the United States, the president should take advantage of the meeting in Hiroshima to make a nod to Western leaders.

One of the Planalto sources says that Lula was already going to the G-7 anyway and just hasn’t confirmed the trip yet just for a matter of agenda, since the postponement of the trip to China messed up the schedule. The invitation must be accepted because it was the first time that Brazil was invited to attend the summit since Lula’s first term.

The summit takes place between the 19th and 21st of May.

The president should also participate in the coronation of King Charles III, at Westminster Abbey, in London, on May 6, as the analyst of the CNN Gustavo Uribe.

The decision to go to England is also related to the government’s attempt to put a damper on declarations about the war.

On Monday (17th), the United States and the European Union countered Lula’s statements, in which the president insinuated that the US and the EU had prolonged the war and that the decision for the battle had been taken “by two countries”.

In Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates, on Sunday (16th), Lula stated: “President Putin does not take peace initiatives. Zelensky does not take peace initiatives. Europe and the United States end up contributing to the continuation of this war”.

White House spokesman John Kirby said that Lula “is reproducing Russian and Chinese propaganda” and that the comments were “simply wrong”.

The speech by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Sergei Lavrov, that Brazil and Russia have aligned visions, during a visit to Brasília, would be one more reason for Lula to nod to the group of Western countries.
