President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) is expected to speak about the war in Ukraine at the meeting he will have with Pope Francis this week at the Vatican. The information was given during the travel briefing at the Itamaraty Palace.
“There are matters of global and regional interest because the pope is interested in these matters. For example: the war in Ukraine. They will probably talk about the war in Ukraine. They will certainly exchange perspectives and ideas on this subject”, said Ambassador Maria Luisa Escorel, Secretary for Europe, United States and Canada at the Itamaraty.
She stated that both should also deal with hunger and the environment.
“The agenda of the Lula government has a lot of convergence with the agenda of the Holy See on poverty reduction, sustainable development, reduction of inequalities and fight against social injustices and hunger”, he said.
Lula will also meet with the president of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, and with the mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri.
“It is more of a personal encounter. Remember that he was one of the personalities that President Lula visited when he was imprisoned in Curitiba. This naturally engendered great empathy and friendship between the two,” he said.
On this occasion, they will discuss bilateral relations and also the European Union-Mercosur agreement. “Italy is one of the countries that strongly support the conclusion of the agreement”, said the ambassador.
She stated that there was a Brazilian request for a meeting with the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, which ended up not being scheduled due to her schedule.
“It was considered, in fact, a meeting, but, due to a scheduling problem, it was not confirmed”, he said.
Conference in Paris
Lula will also go to France for an international climate conference.
Itamaraty confirmed to the CNN that the president is expected to speak at Global Citizen, a music festival.
Lula’s speech is scheduled for Thursday (22) evening. In the morning of the following day, he will speak at the Climate Conference.
