The earthquake, the most violent to hit Turkey this century, was also felt in Cyprus and Lebanon. It was followed by another 7.7 magnitude tremor. It was not yet clear how much damage was caused by the second quake, which occurred as rescue workers were sifting through rubble amid difficult weather conditions.
