Lula speaks at COP27, NASA’s Artemis I mission takes off and more on November 16

President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s (PT) schedule of commitments at COP27, in Egypt, and the takeoff of NASA’s Artemis I space mission, are among the highlights of this Wednesday (16).

Lula speaks at COP27 and meets EU climate policy chief this Wednesday

The president-elect, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), meets this Wednesday (16) with the head of climate policy of the European Union, Frans Timmermans, in yet another bilateral agenda at COP27, which takes place in Sharm el-Sheik , in Egypt.

As happened on Tuesday (15), when Lula met the special envoy for the United States, John Kerry, and the Chinese High Representative for the Climate, Xie Zhen Huz, the meeting with the envoy of the European Union will be reserved.

Lula will also make his speech at the event, in the United Nations (UN) area. The speech by the president-elect is scheduled for 12:15 pm Brasília time (5:15 pm in Sharm el-Sheik).

The expectation, according to the assessment of the senior international analyst at CNN Américo Martins, is that Lula reaffirms his government’s commitment to curb deforestation and protect the forest. The intention is to give a positive signal and indicate that it intends to make major changes in the Brazilian climate agenda.

Artemis I Mission Takes Off in a Historic Leap for NASA’s Lunar Program

The historic Artemis I mission took off in the early hours of this Wednesday morning (16), after months of waiting. The imposing 98-metre-high space launch system ignited its engines at 3:47 am (Brasília time).

The landmark event kicked off a journey that will send an unmanned spacecraft around the moon, paving the way for NASA to return astronauts to the lunar surface for the first time in half a century.

On top of the rocket is the Orion spacecraft, a gum-shaped capsule that broke away from the rocket after reaching space. Orion was designed to carry humans, but its passengers for this test mission are of the inanimate variety, including some mannequins that collect vital data to help future living crews.

Poland joins G20 agenda after missile hits Ukraine border

The situation in Poland was on the agenda in Bali, Indonesia, where world leaders are meeting for the Group of 20 (G20) summit this Wednesday (16).

During the morning, at local time, US President Joe Biden held an emergency meeting with representatives of some nations about the Russian-made missile that hit Polish territory on Tuesday (15).

In addition to Biden, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, President European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Carlos Michel were at the emergency meeting.

An official G20 discussion is yet to take place on Wednesday. Before the emergency meeting, Macron’s government reported that the French president had convened talks on the subject to the group.

Donald Trump announces candidacy for president of the United States in 2024

Republican Donald Trump announced on Tuesday (15) that he will run for the presidency of the United States in the 2024 elections, in what will be his third consecutive attempt to reach the position.

Winner in the 2016 elections, the businessman was defeated by the current president, Joe Biden, in his re-election campaign two years ago.

To get the nomination again, Trump will have to face any opponents of his party in the Republican primaries, scheduled for the period between February and July 2024.

They will take place in the 50 states, in the capital Washington and in five other North American territories around the world, defining the candidate who will dispute the presidential elections, in November.

Alckmin will meet with TCU president and will present new names in this 4th

The vice president-elect, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), will meet this Wednesday (16) with the acting president of the Federal Audit Court (TCU), Minister Bruno Dantas.

Scheduled for 4:30 pm, the meeting will be at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (CCBB), headquarters of the transition, and will serve for Dantas to deliver documentation requested last week by the elected government, which asked the Court for copies of accounts, audits, monitoring and other documents that assist in the change of management. Alckmin will also announce new names of the technical groups for the transition, on an agenda scheduled for 11:00 am.

The expectation is that the president of the TCU will deliver to the vice-elect a document in which the areas of the Federal Public Administration are presented in which the court identified risks that could compromise both the quality of the services offered by the government and the effectiveness of public policies.
