Lula tells Xi that “no one will prohibit Brazil from improving relations with China”

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said, this Friday (14th), that “no one will prohibit Brazil from improving its relationship with China”.

The statement was given before the President of China, Xi Jinping, at a meeting at the Great Palace of the People, seat of the Chinese government, in Beijing.

A day after visiting the Chinese tech giant Huawei’s factory, which is banned or restricted by western countries, the Brazilian president tried to reaffirm a position of independence in relation to foreign policy and non-alignment with any of the international forces.

“Yesterday we visited Huawei in a demonstration that we want to tell the world that we are not prejudiced against the Chinese people. And that nobody is going to prohibit Brazil from improving its relationship with China,” said Lula.

Lula was at the technological center during the early hours of Thursday (13), at Brasilia time — which is equivalent to the afternoon in Shanghai — and did not speak to the press.

The president did not speak to the press. On Twitter, he said that the company made a presentation about 5G and solutions in telemedicine, education and connectivity.

The PT’s agenda in China has caused discomfort among American diplomats, according to reports made to CNN .

The international analyst of CNN Lourival Sant’Anna highlighted that Huawei was banned by the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. Germany is considering doing the same.

Other countries adopted specific restrictions, of equipment generations or for certain companies, as was the case of the Italian TIM.

“The Chinese company claims it is private. However, there is no large Chinese company that does not have Chinese Communist Party officials on its board of directors. Even if Brazil does not share the concerns of these countries with the risk of invasion of privacy and control of citizens by the Chinese government, there is a second risk”, wrote Lourival.

“The United States is restricting the access of Chinese companies and strategic technology components, such as semiconductors (chips). There is a risk of discontinuity in the value chain of Huawei products, which could compromise the telephony operators that use them. That’s why Huawei’s net profit fell by 69% last year,” he added.

“Lula’s visit to Huawei raises a red flag for the United States,” said Evan Medeiros, an expert on US-China relations at Georgetown University in Washington, in a webinar hosted by the Brazilian Center for International Relations (Cebri) this Thursday. fair (13).

Medeiros, who was the main adviser to the White House on Asia-Pacific in the administration of Barack Obama, pondered that the strategy of extracting the maximum advantage from relations with the US and China is understandable, but requires a lot of “sophistication”.
