Lula will have a meeting with the nine governors of the Northeast to discuss the increase in hunger

Days after a study revealed that 33 million people are hungry in Brazil, former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) will start a tour of the Northeast with the reversal of poverty as the main agenda. On Thursday (16), the PT will disembark in Natal (RN), where he will have lunch with the nine governors of the region.

Members of the coordination of Lula’s pre-presidential campaign told CNN that, shortly after the publication of the survey showing that the number of Brazilians without food has doubled in two years, the former president was advised to make a statement on the subject. Lula chose, however, to talk about the data on the trip to the Northeast.

Right after lunch with the governors, Lula will participate in the 1st Northeast Fair of Family Agriculture and Solidarity Economy (Fenafes), at the Natal Convention Center. The event will bring together family farmers from all Northeastern states, represented by their cooperatives, associations, traditional communities and peasant and union movements.

After Lula’s visit to the fair’s stands, a political act is scheduled in which the former president intends to make a speech focused on the debate on the increase in hunger and misery in the country.

Data from the survey carried out by the Brazilian Network for Research on Food and Nutrition Sovereignty and Security (PENSSAN Network) showed that regional and social factors aggravate the situation of families who experience hunger in the country.

The lack of food is more common among families living in the North (25.7%) and Northeast (21%); it is higher in rural areas, where it affects 18.6% of households; and it is a reality in the house of 21.8% of farmers and small producers.

According to Lula’s allies, the former president intends to cite the figures from the survey on hunger with data from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Pnad Contínua), released this Friday (10), according to which inequality has increased in the country.

The IBGE survey showed that the income of Brazilians has never been so low. The average household income per capita fell to R$ 1,353 in 2021. It is the lowest value in ten years, considering the historical series started in 2012.
