“Lula would easily prevail over Bolsonaro if elections were held today”

Former center-left President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva would run in the 2022 presidential election with a big lead over incumbent far-right Zaich Bolsonaro, according to a poll by the Datafolha Institute.

Lula would get 41% of the vote in the first round, compared to 23% for Mr Bolsonaro if the election were held today, according to Datafolia data. In the second round, the former president (2003-2010) would win with 55% of the vote, compared to 32% of the current (excluding 11% of invalid and blank, as well as those who did not express an opinion), according to this poll, which was conducted the day before yesterday Tuesday and yesterday Wednesday in a sample of 2,071 people and has a statistical error margin of ± 2%.

In the first round, 3rd place would be occupied by former judge Serzou Mourou, who is credited with 7% of the vote, according to the poll.

Mr. Mourou was the one who signed the sentence of Lula, who remained in prison for 17 months in 2018 and 2019 due to allegations of corruption. He was appointed Minister of Justice in the government under Mr. Bolsonaro, before resigning.

Lula, who pleaded not guilty from the start, regained his political rights in March when the Supreme Court overturned his convictions. He is therefore able to run in the October 2022 elections.

In recent days, the historical leader of the Workers’ Party (PT, center-left) has been meeting with politicians, businessmen and potential allies, although so far he has not confirmed or denied that he will be a candidate.

In the poll, when participants were asked to spontaneously say who they would vote for in 2022, without a list of names, Lula’s lead appeared to be lower (21%, compared to 17% who said they would vote for Zaich Bolsonarou), while 49% said they “do not know” who they would vote for.

Lula and Mr. Bolsonaru are at the top of the ranking not only in terms of positive opinions, but also in terms of rejections (36% and 54% respectively).

Brazil is going through a major economic crisis, exacerbated by the new coronavirus pandemic and its impact. The country mourns more than 428,000 deaths due to COVID-19.

A Brazilian Senate committee is investigating the handling of the pandemic by Zaich Bolsonaro, who from the outset downplayed its gravity, challenged the use of masks, opposed restrictive measures and questioned the effectiveness of vaccines.

The far-right politician, former captain, a member of the Brazilian Congress for 28 years, came to power in January 2019, after riding the wave of conservative turn of the electorate in Brazil and the rejection of the PT, which remained in power for 13 years, until removal from power of Lula himself’s successor to the presidency.
