The coordinators of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s campaign in the area of agribusiness, senator Carlos Favaro and former minister Neri Geller, prepare a specific government program for the sector that should be delivered to the candidate next week.
Baptized for the time being the “Government Plan for Brazilian Agribusiness”, it foresees, for example, compensation for farmers who implement social and environmental measures.
One of the ideas, called “Agro Social”, foresees linking the interest reduction to measures such as the implementation of a “Private Pension Plan for its employees” and to those who “guarantee medical assistance and/or professional qualification to employees”.
In another item referring to the cost of the Safra Plan, the plan provides for the reduction of interest in the granting of credit to producers who “foster the chain of bioinput use and promote low carbon production”, “who offer medical and dental care to employees ” and that “promote professional qualification courses to their employees”.
There are also a number of suggestions for sustainable practices, among them the incentive to “transform degraded pastures into low carbon soybean/corn crops”. The measure is seen as a way to reduce deforestation pressure on the Amazon. Another proposal in this sense is the payment of the environmental asset by force of law and national and international regulations.
In addition, there are other measures being studied, such as incentives for technological innovations, the strengthening of the Warehouse Construction Program through the availability of resources with low interest rates, the opening of an option for the acquisition of machinery and equipment in dollars and the possibility of opening of the agricultural credit market in the country.
In Lula’s campaign, there is no pretense of conquering the entire agribusiness sector, a segment mostly favorable to President Jair Bolsonaro. Even more so after recent statements by PT accusing farmers of fascists.
But there is a strategy to expand dialogue, present proposals and reduce the sector’s rejection of petismo. To this end, the idea is to get closer to sectoral leaders and agricultural entrepreneurs.
