The Minister of Integration and Regional Development, Waldez Góes, stated this Sunday (5) that flooding in Rio Grande do Sul is expected to continue for at least another week. According to Góes, the water should remain high in the greater Porto Alegre region, even if it stabilizes in the coming days.
Federal government efforts
At a press conference, the minister highlighted that the federal government is 100% mobilized on the recommendation and leadership of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to help combat the floods. He stated that all necessary forces are being used, with thousands of civilians and military personnel working in rescue efforts and thousands of people have already been rescued.
Góes highlighted the importance of synergy between federal, state and municipal governments, as well as with volunteers and civil society. He also highlighted the need to act to prevent climate tragedies, in addition to immediate response.
Challenges ahead
According to the minister, the next few days will be challenging, with the need to work on restoring basic services and rebuilding damaged infrastructure, such as hospitals, schools and roads. He stressed that the damage is significant and that the federal government is committed to providing all necessary assistance, such as food, water and personal hygiene items.
Góes emphasized the importance of uniting all sectors of society at this challenging time and appealed to the press to help spread the message of solidarity and cooperation.
