Misleading: It is misleading to say that former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) mocked voters who believed in the promise that they would eat picanha if he is elected president of the Republic. Excerpt posted on social media was taken out of context. In fact, Lula laughs at those who doubt that he can keep his promise.
Investigated Content: Video that circulates on several platforms brings Lula’s speech about his promise to allow Brazilians to buy picanha. The content has a caption that suggests that Lula is making fun of voters.
where it was published: Kwai, TikTok, Youtube and Twitter.
Completion of Proof: It is misleading that former president Lula (PT) has mocked those who believe in his promise that the people will eat picanha again if he is elected president of the Republic. The video that went viral is just a snippet of a speech that Lula did during campaign actheld in October in São Paulo.
In the full video, it is possible to see that, when saying “and I’m still promising that the people will eat picanha?”, the PT member was talking about advances in the productive capacity of Brazilian agribusiness when investing in technology and, therefore, mocking those who doubt that it is possible to fulfill the promise.
misleading, for Comprova, is content taken from the original context and used in another so that its meaning undergoes changes; that uses inaccurate data or that leads to an interpretation different from the author’s intention; content that confuses, with or without the deliberate intent to cause harm.
Scope of publication: As of the publication of this verification, shared posts have garnered a total of 223,600 views, counting Twitter, Kwai, Youtube, and TikTok.
What does the publisher say?: The person responsible for the publication was contacted by Kwai and Instagram, but until the publication of this verification he had not responded.
How do we check: The report looked for the original content on Lula’s official Youtube channel and found a video of 01:32:35 of duration, in which the presidential candidate receives support from civil society personalities and highlights his/her main commitments to the population, if elected, speaking about the environment, job creation and agribusiness.
Then, we contacted Lula’s press office and tried to contact the person responsible for the publication.
Speech has been taken out of context
The target video of this verification uses a clipped excerpt from a longer speech by former President Lula. On the occasion, the PT spoke to supporters during a meeting, in São Paulo, with prominent names in the areas of economy, education, environment, among other sectors, in addition to political leaders, businessmen and journalists. The event took place on October 10th and was broadcast on Lula’s social networks.
In his speech, he highlighted that Brazil has a large production capacity in agribusiness due to the high technology used and that, today, the country produces much more than in the past.
“Today, we are exporting a lot of technology in soybeans, a lot of genetic engineering in chicken and pork. It’s not easy. It took us 90 days to kill a chicken, today it takes 35 days to kill, it took 48 months to kill an ox, today you kill at 15 months, 18 months,” he said.
It was following this statement that Lula said, laughing: “And I’m still promising that the people will eat picanha?”. With the smile of the candidate, the others present at the table, among them the candidate for vice president Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), also laugh.
Sought by Comprova, Lula’s adviser said that the video circulating on the networks takes the former president’s speech out of context. The team says that PT laughed out of good humor, since in his government “many more people will eat picanha”. “The president was talking about agribusiness and that he would have to produce even more, with more technology, because under his government many more people will eat steak. It was good humour, no mockery. (President Jair) Bolsonaro is afraid of losing the election, so his followers are insisting on fake news ”, says a note sent to Comprova.
Lula promised picanha and is criticized by Bolsonaro
The former president has used the picanha example to promise that the population’s quality of life will improve in an eventual government under his command. In August, on the Sabbath of Jornal Nacional, from TV Globo, Lula said that the economy will grow again and Brazilians will be able to cook a lot of barbecue. “People have to go back to eating barbecue, eating a picanha and having a beer,” he said.
The promise has been put to the test by Bolsonaro, candidate for reelection. This month he said that Lula thinks that “the people are idiots”.
why do we investigate: Comprova investigates suspicious content about the pandemic, public policies of the federal government and the presidential elections that go viral on social media. False or misleading publications involving presidential candidates, as in the video verified here, can lead to misinterpretations of reality and influence voters at the time of voting. Citizens have the right to base their choices on true and reliable information.
Other checks on the topic: In previous verifications that mention Lula, Comprova showed that it is false that the cap acronym used by the presidential candidate is related to a criminal faction; that are mounts the reproductions of Twitter and the G1 that attribute to the PT statements about disarmament and that video deceives saying that he could lose his candidacy because of Lava Jato.
